Problem

InvestmentNews.com users were overwhelmed with information. An audience made up of mostly financial advisors didn’t have time to go through the homepage or the site to find the nuggets of information that were most relevant to what they were doing, whether it was advice on how to handle a client, investment news or the most recent white paper. Their content had to be better organized, easier to scan and given hierarchy.

Process

The process started with a complete content inventory so that we can begin to organize information by specific relevance to the user. From this, we determined users would come to the site for these reasons:

• To get news about their industry (financial advisories)
• To get the latest market news and information
• To get information and advice on how to do their jobs better
• To participate and interact with like-minded individuals and share information

These user motivations served as the foundation for the content and design decisions that would follow. In fact, earlier drafts of the user interface design actually visually segmented these functions. But as the process further developed, a hierarchy that started with news and information about the industry took hold and is more reflected in the final designs.
